Inside the September October issue of Edinburgh Life

Features

We take a closer look at some of Edinburgh’s most distinctive buildings open to the public this September as part of Doors Open Days. A feature on the golden age of steam travel celebrates 200 years since the creation of the modern railway and the impact of train travel in Scotland. We also mark 40 years of the Lothian Gaelic Choir, and look at the new home for Richard Demarco’s art collection at Papple Steading.

Historic perspectives feature through 1930 and 1993 bird’s-eye photographs of Bruntsfield and the Meadows. Art Walk Porty returns with ten days of creative events along the shoreline. Profiles include Lord Cockburn, a prominent figure who pioneered the protection of Edinburgh’s beauty, and photographer Soo Burnell, whose latest series captures the capital through a cinematic lens. The issue also explores the centenary of Edinburgh’s legendary 603 Squadron, and presents Doug Corrance’s distinctive photographic record of the capital.

Food & Drink

Experience seasonal flavours with a roast pumpkin recipe from Jess Elliott Dennison’s new recipe book. We review The Leddie, a welcoming retreat in Aberlady, and highlight foodie-hotspots Patatino at The Hoxton and Lannan Pantry in Stockbridge. There is also a chance to win tickets for Edinburgh’s Whisky Festival, plus a first look at Nespresso’s new store in St James Quarter.

Society

The Oyster Club’s visit to Edinburgh Printmakers, a summer party in Drumsheugh Gardens, and Richard Demarco’s double celebration at Papple Steading. Also featuring Drummond Tennis Club’s fundraising event for the British Heart Foundation and the launch of Jess Elliott Dennison’s new recipe book at Custom Lane.
